‘Interview with a Mexican!’ Satirical Comedy at Guadalupe Theater This Weekend

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center announces that it will be presenting the comedy Interview With A Mexican! this coming Friday and Saturday, May 6 and 7, at the historic Guadalupe Theater. Interview With A Mexican! is a touring production by Denver-based Su Teatro Cultural & Performing Arts Center.

Interview With A Mexican! is an original play by Su Teatro Executive Artistic Director and resident playwright Anthony J. Garcia.

It was inspired by Gustavo Arellano’s column ‘Ask a Mexican,’ and it uses satire, humor and political incorrectness to examine stereotypes, anti-immigration politics and misconceptions outsiders hold about Mexican culture.

“We at Su Teatro are so excited to bring this explosive and humorous play to the Westside of San Antonio,” said Garcia. “The last time we performed at the Teatro Guadalupe was in the early 1990s,” he added.

“Su Teatro’s work and contribution to theater is widely recognized,” said Guadalupe Theater Manager Jorge Piña. “I am very honored Su Teatro is returning to the Guadalupe stage.”

ArtScene SA asked Mr. Piña how extensive the collaboration between the Guadalupe and Su Teatro will become, since they recently collaborated on Anna de Luna’s Carmen from Mexico. He replied, “We are in the early stages of collaborating with Su Teatro in the future. We kind of want this Covid to go away and plan better with more funding”

The goal of our Teatro Salon program is to help develop new plays with local playwrights. Carmen From Mexico was my second effort. Patricia Zamora’s new work, Curanderas and Chocolate, premiered in August of 2019. Our third production will be Cesar Duenas’ new children’s play, La Niña Girasol, which will premiere in late July. More info to come!”

Mr. Piña and Mr. Garcia have had a long relationship. “Both Tony and I have know each other since the Chicano Movement days of the 70’s,” he said. “We collaborated with many productions in the 80s and 90s, especially commissioning him to write and direct the life of Lydia Mendoza that we premiered in the early 90s. Both of us wanted to work together again.”

The production is made possible with support from the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture and the National Performance Network.
