The Classic’s Production of ‘On Golden Pond’ Addresses Challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease
The Classic Theatre of San Antonio presents Ernest Thompson’s On Golden Pond, a soul-stirring play that explores love, aging, and family bonds — all while shedding light on the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. The show is the first title in The Classic’s sixteenth season, which features the theme Welcome Home.
Performances will take place at The Classic Theatre of San Antonio’s new performance space, The Cellar Theater at the San Pedro Playhouse, from Nov. 2-19. Performances start at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and 2:00 p.m. on Sundays.
“On Golden Pond is a play that holds a special place in the hearts of many, not only because of the success of the 1981 film adaptation but also because of its universal themes that continue to resonate with audiences of all generations,” said director Anthony Caravino. “This play reminds us that family bonds can be tender and complex, encouraging us to appreciate life’s simple yet profound moments.”
The star Allan Ross told ArtScene SA: “When we founded The Classic Theatre, we spent over a year trying to find a home. Today when we turn on the TV news or pick up a paper, we find the world seems to be experiencing the same search. We all want to find a home where we can feel safe and, if we are very lucky, find a family we love. On Golden Pond exemplifies that search for home and family and love.
“This production is a special gift for me because I can act with my beautiful and talented wife again. Terri and I also have the unique opportunity to have Christi Eanes play our daughter again. She was our daughter in Painting Churches, and she was our daughter-in-law in All My Sons. We have known her for many years and have long thought of her as part of our extended family. This production does feel like coming home again. Five of the original founders have come back together to bring this wonderful script to life. Please come home with us to Golden Pond.”
Set on a serene New England lake, On Golden Pond follows the Thayer couple, Norman and Ethel, as they navigate the challenges of growing old, including Norman’s underlying battle with Alzheimer’s. With humor and tenderness, this timeless play reminds us of the enduring power of love and the importance of forgiveness in the backdrop of a picturesque summer retreat, making it a touching and memorable theatrical experience.
On Golden Pond celebrates the continued contributions of vibrant theater artists 65 years and older to our community and features the work of four Classic Theatre of San Antonio founding members, Allan Ross, Terri Peña Ross, Diane Malone, and Anthony Ciaravino.
The Classic Theatre is honored to have the Alzheimer’s Association as their community spotlight partner for this production to help spread awareness about the impact of Alzheimer’s and Dementia on the community.
The company will offer community nights, including a Champagne Opening Night, Pride Night, ASL Night, and an exclusive Virtual Talkback with Academy Award-winning playwright Ernest Thompson. To find out when each of these special nights is taking place visit this link.
