The Public Theater of San Antonio Continues to Grow

The Public Theater of San Antonio’s new property at 741 W. Ashby Pl.

On Tuesday, July 31, the ambitious Public Theater of San Antonio‘s dreams got even bigger.

When the nearby Pho Sure Restaurant announced that it was shutting its doors, the Public moved quickly to secure the property. Located at 741 W. Ashby Pl., the corner lot is conveniently located next to the land that was donated last season by the Aleman family. With both of these properties secured, the theater can now get a clearer picture of what goals can be achieved for a new facility.

George Green, the Public’s CEO/Artistic Director, said “I feel it is important to state that we have no intention of moving [the theater] and the acquisition of land or properties should not be misunderstood. There has been some confusion regarding that,  so let me be clear — San Pedro Playhouse is the home of the Public Theater of San Antonio and it is in our plan for it to remain so for many years to come.”

“Two years ago, the Board of Directors and myself had a discussion about changing the mindset and culture of our organization — to create a plan and a model that would lead toward solvency and sustainability,” he added. “As we work toward the future, we are delicately maneuvering ourselves to be a cherished artistic institution for the city and its people.”

By expanding our footprint, we are committed more than ever to becoming San Antonio’s premier theatrical institution.

Board Chair Omar Leos, endorsed the Board’s support via email, “The Board of Directors is extremely excited about the purchase of the property at the corner of W. Ashby and N. Flores. By expanding our footprint, we are committed more than ever to becoming San Antonio’s premier theatrical institution. Our city and citizens deserve it. We are thrilled to see what the future holds for The Public.”

The Public will be launching its 2018-19 season with Disney’s Newsies, a co-production with Ballet San Antonio. It runs Sept. 13 through Oct. 14 at the Russell Hill Rogers Theater. Information about the new season can be found here.
